Creating Interactive Surfaces with the Touch Board

Whether your project requires capacitive or remote sensing, the touchpad is a great brain tool.

One way to use a sensor is to detect if an object is placed in a sensor, and this function is used in this installation.

Multimedia artist Ricardo Castaniola specializes in the art of the term, using the touchpad and electroplating to create an interactive surface artwork that tells the story “Musicians Town Bremen”, in his latest work titled “Ow East der Essel”. We signed with Ricardo to find out more about this piece.

The exhibition will be hosted by the Kinder Museum for Brain E.V. Was run by Celebrating the biennial of fairy tales. The process of realizing the artwork through design, prototyping and installation took more than 3 months.

The idea of ​​interactive art was to convey the mood of the four creatures at different moments of their story.

So he created the work with about six elements: six audio scenes pertaining to the six scenes, which can be heard individually one by one.

He then records the animals he calls (donkeys, dogs, cats and chickens) with a special voice to add some paradox and mystery.

Ricardo then determined what kind of interaction the audience wanted with the artwork and installation design.

He chose to use the table as the main structure to allow many people to interact with the piece at once.

Industrial policy consists of placing metal objects (in the form of animals) in certain sensitive areas of touch, and removing samples by looking for four animals in the story.

He created a secret layer of words (animal samples) to enrich the possibilities of conversation that could only be heard aloud (sound tape samples).

For the technology behind the installation, Ricardo used electrophoresis on cardboard to create sensors.

Stay away from working directly on the laminate, giving it the ability to repair with a wider margin of error and without damaging the surface.

He placed screws on all surfaces to cover the cables leading to the touchpad (1.5-core Mono Wire with logs).

The touchpad measures input values ​​and sends them to the computer via USB as a MIDI CC message. Max 8 (Cycling 74) running on MacBook Pro interprets messages as triggers and takes care of the entire logical switch architecture and audio samples.

The audio signals are then output via a 6-channel audio interface (M-Audio Audiophile firewire), with six Dayton Audio DAX30 HSF-4 corners (for organisms) and placed directly on the table with abrupt connectors at the center of the table (for soundscape).

The biggest challenge was to research and test the best conductive materials for working with paint and electrostatic plates.

When he created a set of images, it took a lot of effort to understand that for each statue (made of Harm Week) and his use of one and a half mm copper needed to increase conductivity and achieve a greater standard of interpretation.

The Bear Conductive gave him very useful suggestions on how to create a special shape of the sensor (including a signal and another earth), which also works with metal objects without human contact.

However, drawing and cutting this size on a 2mm cardboard was a lot of energy and time consuming.

Since August 2019, Ricardo has been collecting lots of notes directly from the staff at the Westerberg Museum.

The main users of the installation are children, their parents and their teachers, as well as other adults who come to the Kinder Museum. They all came in different ways depending on their age.

Young people are fascinated by the sounds of animals and metal shapes that they try to emulate with their voice and body.

Elders are curious to find out how to correct their behavior and then explore all the possibilities of technology.

The complexity of the structure leads to sophisticated behavior when searched by audience members.

Initially, most users were extremely active in keeping hands on the sensors, taking the interactive experience and ignoring the actions of other people in the vicinity.

However, it quickly gets into the mix of funny foul words. When they get tired of it, they change their attitude automatically: they soften their behavior and pay more attention to other players.

This coincides with the educational goal of synthesis: activating the imagination through audible and sudden stimuli and promoting collaboration rather than uniqueness in order to discover discoveries.
